A routine speak present query for Robert De Niro took a political ― and extremely poignant ― activate Wednesday’s broadcast of “The Late Present with Stephen Colbert.”

Whereas selling his new Netflix political thriller “Zero Day,” the Oscar-winning actor was requested by host Stephen Colbert to call his heroes. De Niro first listed late actor Marlon Brando and South African chief Nelson Mandela.

However when Colbert pressed De Niro once more for an American hero, the outspoken critic of President Donald Trump named the law enforcement officials who defended the U.S. Capitol from the mob of violent Trump supporters on Jan. 6, 2021.

“I consider the Capitol Police, the blokes at Capitol Police. The Metropolitan Police,” De Niro stated. “Michael Fanone, Aquilino Gonell, Harry Dunn, Daniel Hodges and all people else who was concerned and affected and harm by that.”

Colbert adopted up with a pointed query referencing efforts by Trump and Republicans to downplay the violence of that day.

“Are you able to think about being Capitol Police now and watching these folks marching previous you who wish to deny that you simply served them that day?” Colbert requested.

“Yep, it’s one thing,” De Niro responded.

The pair then fell silent for a number of seconds.
