Tim Merlier narrowly beat Italian Jonathan Milan to win stage three of the Tour de France in Dunkirk, whereas Mathieu van der Poel retained the general lead. The stage was suffering from crashes, together with one which pressured Jasper Philipsen to desert with accidents, and one other involving Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel.
