In northern Bolivia, on the sting of the Amazon rainforest, lies a savannah referred to as the Llanos de Moxos. That is the stamping-ground of Umberto Lombardo, of the Autonomous College of Barcelona. Archaeologists as soon as thought the Amazon basin’s soil would have been too poor to have sustained a big human inhabitants earlier than Europeans arrived. Dr Lombardo is head of a group proving them incorrect.
