Britain has ‘lost control’ of its borders, defence secretary tells Sky News | Politics News

Channel crossings by lots of of migrants this weekend had been “fairly surprising” and present Britain has “misplaced management” of its borders over the past 5 years, the defence secretary has informed Sky Information.

John Healey informed Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips the earlier Conservative authorities left the UK’s asylum system “in chaos” and the nation with “file ranges of immigration”, which his authorities is having to cope with.

On Saturday, lots of of migrants had been seen crossing the Channel.

French police watched on whereas folks, together with youngsters, boarded small boats within the shallows of a seaside in Gravelines, between Calais and Dunkirk.

Authorities had been then pictured escorting the boats as they sailed off in direction of the UK.

Mr Healey stated: “Fairly surprising, these scenes yesterday.

“Reality is, Britain’s misplaced management of its borders over the past 5 years, and the final authorities final yr left an asylum system in chaos and file ranges of immigration.”

He stated it’s a “actually huge drawback” that French police are unable to intervene to intercept boats in shallow waters.

“We noticed the smugglers launching elsewhere and coming round like a taxi to select them up,” Mr Healey added.

He stated the UK is urgent for the French to place new guidelines into operation to allow them to intervene.

“They are not doing it, however for the primary time for years, for the primary time, we have got the extent of cooperation wanted,” Mr Healey stated.

“We have got the settlement that they’ll change the way in which they work, and our focus now’s to push them to get that into operation to allow them to intercept these smugglers and cease these folks within the boats, not simply on the shore.”

On Saturday, Conservative shadow residence secretary Chris Philp accused Labour of getting “utterly misplaced management of our borders”.
