When China’s ruler, Xi Jinping, started calling for “frequent prosperity” in 2021, he made traders nervous. The acknowledged purpose was to scale back inequality. However the time period turned wrapped up with one thing edgier: a morale-destroying marketing campaign to browbeat billionaires into shows of charity, tighten rules on huge tech companies and curb what Mr Xi known as the “disorderly enlargement of capital”.
