IN 1776 THOMAS PAINE, a traitorous Englishman dwelling within the American colonies, printed a seditious 47-page pamphlet. Referred to as “Frequent Sense”, it turned a best-seller. It argued that the colonies ought to search independence from British rule. Later that 12 months they did precisely that.
