A crew has entered the Worldwide Area Station (ISS) to exchange the astronauts who have been stranded there for 9 months.

A SpaceX capsule delivered 4 astronauts on Sunday on a mission to permit Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams – who’ve been on the ISS since June 2024 – to return dwelling.

The Dragon craft, with the Crew-10 astronauts inside, docked with the orbiting laboratory at 4.04am UK time, round 29 hours after it had been launched on the top of the Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Area Middle in Florida.

NASA’s Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, each navy pilots, together with Japan’s Takuya Onishi and Russia’s Kirill Peskov, each former airline pilots, will spend the following six months on the area station.

Their mission will permit 4 members of Crew-9, which incorporates Mr Wilmore and Ms Williams, to return to Earth.

It took a number of minutes for Dragon to securely dock on the ISS, in what’s an automatic course of.

However there was about 1 hour and 45 minutes of extra security checks earlier than the hatch could possibly be opened.

Mr Wilmore swung open the area station’s hatch and rang the ship’s bell because the arrivals floated in one after the other and have been greeted with hugs and handshakes.

How they have been stranded

Mr Wilmore and Ms Williams initially deliberate to go to area for simply eight days but got stuck on the station after their Boeing Starliner spacecraft began experiencing issues.

Technical points left them stranded, and numerous makes an attempt to carry them dwelling have been unsuccessful.

The craft encountered so many issues that NASA insisted it return to Earth empty, leaving the pilots behind till now.

“It was a beautiful day. Nice to see our associates arrive,” Ms Williams advised Mission Management after the brand new astronauts had been welcomed aboard.

Talking after the profitable docking, Ms McClain added: “Crew-10 has had an incredible journey up right here and I can not inform you the immense pleasure of our crew once we regarded out the window and we noticed the area station for the primary time.

“That’s such a tremendous journey. You may hardly even put it into phrases.”

The journey again to Earth

The 4 newcomers will spend the following few days studying the station’s ins and outs from Mr Wilmore and Ms Williams.

Then the 2 of them will strap into their very own capsule later within the week, one which has been up there since final yr, to shut out the sudden prolonged mission.

The pair’s journey again arrived in late September with a downsized crew of two and two empty seats reserved for the leg again.

However extra delays emerged when their replacements’ model new capsule wanted in depth battery repairs.

An older capsule took its place, pushing up their return by a few weeks to mid-March.

Climate allowing, the SpaceX capsule carrying them and two different astronauts will undock no sooner than Wednesday and splash down off Florida’s coast.
