Critics are calling out Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth over a stunning new report in the Washington Post that he ordered a U.S. strike drive to kill everybody on board a suspected drug-trafficking vessel within the Caribbean in September.

When two survivors have been seen within the wreckage, commanders launched a second “double faucet” strike to kill them, the Publish reported on Friday.

“The order was to kill all people,” one supply with direct data of the operation instructed the Publish, which mentioned the 2 survivors have been “blown out of the water.”

New York College legislation professor Ryan Goodman wrote on X that the Publish report particulars a “textbook war crime/extrajudicial killing.”

He wrote in a follow-up submit that the administration’s declare to lawmakers that the second strike was to clear particles “appears to be a bold-face falsehood.”

President Donald Trump has justified the strikes by saying they’ve focused drug traffickers, whereas Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned they know precisely who’s on every boat and what they’re carrying.

“We monitor them from the very starting. We all know who’s on them, who they’re, the place they’re coming from, what they’ve on them,” Rubio said last month.

Hegseth on Friday called the Post report “fabricated, inflammatory, and derogatory” and mentioned the “declared intent is to cease deadly medicine, destroy narco-boats, and kill the narco-terrorists.”

He didn’t problem the specifics of the Publish report however insisted that the operation is “lawful below each U.S. and worldwide legislation.”

Critics disagreed, firing again on X:

If true, that is heinous and unlawful. You don’t kill helpless survivors of a sinking boat. (It enraged us when, for instance, the Japanese would machine-gun American survivors within the water.)
You don’t kill somebody who’s hors de fight, and no quarter orders are flatly unlawful. https://t.co/lhaL89s650

This is able to be a struggle crime even when there have been an precise struggle and these individuals have been precise combatants, which there is not and so they weren’t.

It is unquestionably an illegal murder below any type of legislation you want to apply: navy or civilian, home or worldwide, federal or… https://t.co/sgJ2VjDijk

If the factual account is appropriate, how can the second strike be defended?
(You might be welcome to imagine, if you want, that the primary strike was lawful. FWIW, I am uncertain that assumption is sound.)
There may be loads of purpose to be involved about the potential of unlawful orders. https://t.co/qRM6uAMmGk

Executing unarmed enemy survivors who pose no menace to U.S. troops is plainly unlawful below the Uniform Code of Army Justice. So when individuals ask “What’s an instance of an unlawful order from the Trump administration?,” that is an instance. pic.twitter.com/v96qSkxLVC

.@SecWar — you can be held accountable for unlawful orders you give.

This calls for Congressional investigation, and the unredacted video of the strike and radio recordings of the orders given should be shared with Congress and the American individuals instantly. https://t.co/l0Q2M7XMSg

Article 3 and 12 of the Geneva Conference violations, it’s so past clear. Southcom’s high lawyer mentioned it was unlawful and also you overruled him. In case you’re so assured, declassify the OLC opinion, and inform us which cartels we’re in an “armed battle” with. Why cover this data?

— John Jackson (@hissgoescobra) November 28, 2025

.@SecWar gave an unlawful order, and all who adopted it should be answerable.

Each member of the gov’t, together with the navy, has an impartial obligation to the Structure, legal guidelines, and his sworn oath.

Since a minimum of 1804, an officer follows unlawful orders at his personal peril: https://t.co/iKQHaa41oF pic.twitter.com/i3kcPz1QeK

So that is both: felony homicide if we’re not a struggle or a struggle crime if we have been at struggle.

As residents, we’re complicit if we don’t name this out. Don’t be the villagers close to Aushwitz who “had no thought.” https://t.co/LR6bFzxGyX
