Former White Home lawyer Ty Cobb on Thursday had robust phrases for President Donald Trump and his administration, decrying his obvious weaponization of the Department of Justice throughout a Thursday look on MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber.”
Cobb has long been an outspoken critic of what he sees because the Trump administration’s level of corruption, and minced no phrases when requested in regards to the current indictments of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Lawyer Normal Letitia James.
“Nicely, I believe what we’re seeing is authoritarianism and tyranny that we’re now underneath, and the disintegration of the rule of regulation underneath [U.S. Attorney General] Pam Bondi’s stewardship and her fealty to the president — versus her oath of workplace,” Cobb said Thursday.
He doubled down when requested if he thinks Bondi knowingly violated that oath.
“Nicely, let’s parse that out,” Cobb advised Melber. “Her testimony was that there can be no enemies checklist on the Justice Division. Clearly there may be. Does she know what’s happening? She was immediately ordered by the president to convey these prices.”
Comey was indicted final month on charges of lying to Congress after Trump pressured Bondi to prosecute his political enemies. The ex-FBI chief pleaded not guilty Wednesday and is about to face trial in January. His authorized group has expressed a want to keep away from trial.
James was indicted on Thursday on allegations of bank fraud for allegedly misrepresenting data on official paperwork about properties she owned in New York and Virginia. Trump went on an unhinged social media rant about her final week, calling James “scum.”
Each indictments are being introduced by Lindsey Halligan, who Trump handpicked to replace Erik Siebert because the performing U.S. lawyer for the Japanese District of Virginia. Trump publicly urged Bondi to fire Siebert in a Truth Social submit.
“Did she appoint Lindsey Halligan to be the U.S. Lawyer, despite the fact that she was unqualified and the appointment was unlawful?” Cobb continued on Thursday. “Sure. So my reply to all of your questions is ‘completely.’”
Melber then requested if Halligan just isn’t “legally, validly serving” her submit, and if her hastened appointment may very well be a “drawback” for the instances towards Comey and James.
“I do imagine that to be the case,” stated Cobb, who served as White Home lawyer throughout the first Trump administration. “There’s just one opinion on this problem issued to date within the existence of Part 546, and that was written by [U.S. Supreme Court] Justice [Samuel] Alito when he was assistant lawyer basic in 1986.
“That makes it very clear that, after serving 120 days, solely the district court docket has the authority to nominate a brand new U.S. lawyer — and that didn’t occur right here,” Cobb argued.
Cobb argued that the Comey indictment is especially “unworthy” as a result of federal prosecutors reportedly already told Halligan in a memo that there’s insufficient evidence that he lied whereas testifying earlier than the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020 to indict him.
He additionally famous that issues are totally different now, as Trump has thrown all warning to the wind.
“This time period, the president feels unleashed,” stated Cobb. “It clearly is his perception that he’s entitled to do no matter it’s he desires, and as soon as he decides what he desires, the one problem is how rapidly are you able to do that for me? Pam Bondi delivered Comey and now has delivered James.”
He continued, “Hopefully America will perceive that that’s probably not what the nation was imagined to be about. It shouldn’t be what it’s about. And ideally it’s one thing that folks will stand up, unite and push again on.”
