Rep. Gerry Connolly, a Democrat from Virginia, died Wednesday morning at 75.
He “handed away peacefully at his house this morning surrounded by household,” Connolly’s household stated in an announcement.
In November, Connolly announced he’d been identified with esophageal most cancers and would participate in chemotherapy and immunotherapy. In April, he introduced he would step back from his function as the highest Democrat on the Home Oversight Committee and would not run for reelection as a result of the most cancers, “whereas initially crushed again, has now returned.”
“The solar is setting on my time in public service, and this will likely be my final time period in Congress,” he stated in an announcement.
Connolly was elected to the highest Democratic spot on the Home Oversight Committee in December, defeating Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) in an inner election by a vote of 131-84.
Connolly represented Virginia’s eleventh District, within the Washington suburbs, since 2009. Earlier than that, he served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for 14 years.
“We have been lucky to share Gerry with Northern Virginia for almost 40 years as a result of that was his pleasure, his function, and his ardour,” Connolly’s household stated Wednesday.
