Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse denied entry to Hong Kong to visit newborn grandson | UK News

A Liberal Democrat MP has been denied entry to Hong Kong the place she was attributable to go to her new child grandson.

Wera Hobhouse landed at Hong Kong airport on Thursday after a 13-hour flight – solely to be detained by safety, questioned, and placed on a return flight to the UK, she instructed The Occasions.

She had been attributable to go to her three-month-old grandson and described Chinese language authorities’ actions as a “merciless and upsetting blow”.

“My son was ready on the different finish at arrivals. I could not even see him and provides him a hug and I hadn’t seen him in a 12 months,” she instructed the newspaper.

Ms Hobhouse is a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (Ipac) and has spoken out in opposition to Beijing’s alleged human rights violations in each Hong Kong and Tibet.

China has beforehand banned different Ipac members, together with Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Nusrat Ghani, in addition to former safety minister Tom Tugendhat.

Overseas Secretary David Lammy described Ms Hobhouse’s expertise as “deeply regarding” and says he’ll “urgently elevate” the problems with authorities in each Hong Kong and Beijing to “demand an evidence”.

“It’s deeply regarding to listen to that an MP on a private journey has been refused entry to Hong Kong,” he mentioned.

“As I made clear earlier this week, it could be unacceptable for an MP to be denied entry for merely expressing their views as a Parliamentarian.”

It comes after two Labour MPs were denied entry to Israel final week.

Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed have been suspected of planning to “doc the actions of safety forces and unfold anti-Israeli hatred”, in accordance with the nation’s immigration ministry.

Ms Hobhouse claimed she is the “first MP to be refused entry on arrival to Hong Kong since 1997”.

Her celebration chief Sir Ed Davey described the choice as “heartless” and “completely unacceptable”.
