New Caledonia unrest, one year on: A healthcare system in tatters

France’s abroad territory of New Caledonia is dealing with a rising disaster. The variety of healthcare staff has dropped dramatically, notably because the unrest of Might 2024. In response, authorities are providing incentives – corresponding to annual contracts and free lodging – to draw medical doctors and nurses again to the island. However within the meantime, volunteers are stepping in to coach locals in primary medical care, as clinics and hospitals throughout the island stay closed attributable to workers shortages. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24’s Guillaume Gougeon.
