A Strasbourg courtroom has authorised the everlasting containment of roughly 42,000 tonnes of extremely poisonous chemical waste: cyanide, arsenic, mercury, and extra, on the former Stocamine potash mine. France is ready to inject concrete and seal the mine galleries to guard Europe’s largest aquifer. Geological subsidence, heat-induced rock shifts, and corroding boundaries elevate fears of eventual leakage into the Higher Rhine aquifer, which provides ingesting water to thousands and thousands throughout France, Germany, and Switzerland.
