Arriving in Stepford, Connecticut, Joanna—protagonist of “The Stepford Wives”, a horror novel—is dragged to a “exercise class” on the Merely Stepford Day Spa by a neighbour. The duo are met by 15 identikit girls. Their hair, heights and pores and skin colors differ just a little. Their waist sizes don’t. Every will be no larger than a British dimension 8, their waists nipped in by belts and accentuated by Nineteen Fifties skirts.
