Donald Trump has insisted “I do know what the hell I’m doing” by imposing sweeping tariffs and bragged that world leaders are “kissing my ass” as they attempt to negotiate commerce offers.

The US president was chatting with political donors on the National Republican congressional committee’s annual fundraising dinner in Washington on Tuesday evening.

His rambling 90-minute tackle got here simply hours earlier than his newest tariffs – together with a 104% levy on China – went into impact. However he gave no trace of backing down from a coverage that has despatched markets into meltdown and triggered a worldwide commerce battle.

“I do know what the hell I’m doing,” the president stated. “I do know what I’m doing. And what I’m doing too. That’s why you vote for me.”

The administration has given conflicting indicators over whether or not the tariffs are open to negotiation. Trump claimed: “I’m telling you, these international locations are calling us up, kissing my ass. They’re. They’re dying to make a deal.”

Mocking the pleas of international leaders, he parodied: “Please, please, sir, make a deal. I’ll do something. I’ll do something, sir!”

The president additionally warned of extra tariffs to return.

“We’re going to tariff our prescribed drugs and as soon as we do this they’re going to return dashing again into our nation as a result of we’re the large market… So, we’re going to be asserting very shortly a significant tariff on prescribed drugs.”

The tariffs, introduced final week on what Trump billed as “liberation day”, have wiped trillions of {dollars} off the US inventory market and raised fears of a worldwide recession; on Wednesday China slapped 84% retaliatory tariffs on US items. Larry Summers, a former treasury secretary, described it as “the most important self-inflicted wound we’ve placed on our economic system in historical past”.

Even Republicans, unswervingly loyal on different points, are increasingly uneasy. A number of senators have signed onto a bipartisan invoice that may require presidents to justify new tariffs to Congress. Don Bacon of Nebraska has stated he’ll introduce a Home model of the invoice, saying that Congress wants to revive its powers over tariffs.

However Trump lashed out on the dissenters on Tuesday evening. The writer of The Artwork of the Deal stated: “I see some insurgent Republican, some man who desires to grandstand, say, ‘I believe that Congress ought to take over negotiations.’ Let me let you know, you don’t negotiate like I negotiate.

“I simply noticed it right now, a few your congressmen, sir. ‘I believe we must always get entangled within the negotiation of the tariffs.’ Oh that’s what I want, I want some man telling me the best way to negotiate.”

Regardless of the turmoil, he claimed that he had the “most profitable 100 days within the historical past of this nation” and the stage is now “set for a monumental victory for the Republicans within the midterms” subsequent 12 months.

“They used to go loopy once I talked about… the late, nice Hannibal Lecter. Proper? ‘Why does he discuss that? He’s a fictional character.’ He’s not. We’ve a lot of them that got here throughout the border. He’s truly not.

“However when the folks went to the voting sales space, then we understood why he talked about that as a result of they voted for us. They are saying, ‘We don’t need Hannibal Lecter in our nation.’”

The dinner was additionally notable for a slip of the tongue by Tom Emmer, a Republican congressman from Minnesota. He informed the viewers: “President cunt – Trump is relying on us!”, swiftly correcting himself.
