President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Howard Lutnick, the businessman helming his presidential transition workforce, as his candidate for commerce secretary. Lutnick, the chief government of monetary companies agency Cantor Fitzgerald, has been a vocal backer of Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on a big swath of U.S. imports. Talking at a Trump rally in New York Metropolis final month, Lutnick harked again to the early twentieth century as a time when, in his view, America was nice: “Our financial system was rocking. … We had no earnings tax, and all we had was tariffs.”

In a post asserting Lutnick’s appointment on Reality Social, Trump mentioned the Wall Avenue government will “lead our Tariff and Commerce agenda, with further direct duty for the Workplace of the USA Commerce Consultant.” The U.S. commerce consultant and commerce secretary have historically been two separate roles—respectively held by Robert Lighthizer and Wilbur Ross throughout Trump’s first time period—and it’s unclear whether or not Trump means to now mix them underneath Lutnick. The Trump transition workforce didn’t instantly reply to a request for clarification from Overseas Coverage.
