In his workplace in upstate New York, Wendell Weeks is about to do an advert hoc product demonstration. He brandishes one thing he calls a Norwegian hammer, a tool used to check how resistant supplies are to exhausting knocks. Mr Weeks first experiments on a skinny sheet of steel; the hammer leaves a visual dent. Then he locations the hammer over a small pattern of glass; its percussive influence leaves no hint.
