FREE-DIVING IS a perilous sport. Divers, swimming underwater with out oxygen tanks, continuously black out from low oxygen and put themselves prone to drowning. Marine mammals equivalent to seals, in contrast, can spend most of their lives beneath the floor with out operating such dangers. A paper revealed in Science on March twentieth explains why: seals can apparently sense how a lot oxygen they’ve of their blood and plan their actions accordingly.
